There has been much dialogue on the correct battery cover color, mine is white and I
have seen them either way.
I believe that the early promotion pix were taken with the Matt Schwarz covers and the
bikes have even been delivered that way, but many of the dealers had painted them for
cosmetic purposes.
About the seat: All US Motorsports came with the blue seat, but it is stated otherwise in the microfiche. They also had a solo seat and 3/4 option, the solo was for Behoerd (Police) applications. The dualseat also had a trapdoor at the front, under the driver for first-aid kit and glove storage.
Believe it or not, the Microfiche Plate 51-039 also has a Painted parts code#586 for a Ozeanblau bodywork color code#054 Motorsport, and that calls for the blue seat. I have never seen one, possibly this is where the blue seat was grabbed from for the white Motorsport.
The Motorsport also came equipped with
-4-way flasher (button located inside right fairing upper right corner)
-Front and rear mudflap's
-Audible turn signal

From John R. dec.2003:
The bike is an Euro model with the 40mm exhaust, as I mentioned before with
the Euro Gold Metallic, Red Metallic and the Silver metallic bikes had the same
motor as the 76 R100RS and 77 Non-US R100RS motors. These were a more powerful
motors than any other stock US R100RS made.
As far as flying down the road at 140 mph well that could be possibly be speedometer error as all of the BMW speedometers of that era were a bit optomistic?
Another thing some of these bikes has the optional 33/11 rear drive which also helped the acceleration ( I had that option on my 78 Red Non-US) . As far as a stock bike being blueprinted from the factory; who knows. It could have been just plain stock and as anyone knows, some bikes just run better than others. That with the high output motor may have seemed as it was modified but actually stock.
I read somewhere that the Motorsports in Germany were limited to one per dealer or only large dealerships and most were kept by the dealerships owner. As far as the numbers sold worldwide there is only thing that is for sure is that only 200 were sold in US or that is what was stated on the original Special Editions for 1978 sales literature and the US Stock US models were the de-tuned ones with the 38mm exhaust port and also the airboxes were no longer drilled also I believe that the timing was also changed on them.
To me the SRS (Special RS) is a outstanding bike color wise, and if your lucky enough to have a NON-US model I would never part with it.
Attached is my old 78 SRS (6183550).

From John dec.2003:
It is a European model...As far as only 10 being made, I believe it was more
like 50 to 100.
Color code is: 553 red metallic (not 531) with a 104 gold pinstripe.
They were sold worldwide. The bike is not the Belgium Police model as
Belgium never had that bike on there police force nor any other military use.
If you look back at one of my previous posts I contacted my friend Andre in
Belgium
who kindly passed on a list of all the bikes that the Belgium Royal Constabulary
used (sorry for the spelling), that list is also posted in one
of my old posts. Somehow the red bike picked up the police nickname and I have
heard so many different stories you do not what to believe, but as
I said Belgium never had the bikes.
Another thing if you notice that all of the Red models were built late in
1978 and the transmissions that were used were the actual ones used in
the 1979 model line with the exposed ribs.
The red color was one of the colors that faded very easily and also
contained some of the 546 Gold Metallic paint which was also a easy
fader (see 6091137) on the 78 Webpage . That paint was discontinued around
1980 or earlier by Glasurit as there pigment supplier could no longer get the
pigment. Plus with the fading problems of that paint it also may have
been a reason to no longer those colors.
Many of the Red and Gold bikes were repainted over the years due to
lack of original paint and the fading. Also the lowers on the bike in the
microfiches show them as red. I may be wrong but I suspect that many of
these lowers were simply painted black due to lack of the correct
paint as the lowers are usually the first part on the bike to experience paint
chips.
As with anything on these older bikes BMW never kept any real records
on them. But as far as the colors they are should on the microfiches.
The 78 R100RS Euro bikes had the same motor as the early 1976 R100RS
(the 40mm exhaust ports) and the 40mm carbs. These were the most powerful
R100RS stock bikes made period. The 78 model also had the electronic tach
whish was also sweet and also some of them also had the dual crankcase vents
tubes into the carbs instead of the single vent tube into the right carb.
I really like the guage setup on 6091598 also another option on those
bikes was the 4 way flasher. The kickstart was basically useless but still
adds to the looks greatly.
The 78 Euro bikes are rare in the US, the most rare of them here and in
Europe is the 1978 R100RS Non-US Motorsport.
The metallic bikes sure look sweet but the Motorsport (SRS) Special RS
has a paint job that is simple and one that will hold up better.
Sorry I have not been into the R100RS bikes for a few years and
probably missed some info or just plain forgot.
